We are talking of a bad law change in 1908 being violated in 1914 filled with economic migrants who claimed leaving an English colony for another English colony, yeah that’s the thing. It’s total bullshit, there was no hope for a better life. Just people maybe being used to make a point about a bad immigration law that was claimed discriminatory towards East Indians alone.
The “continuous journey regulation” was more discriminatory to people stopping off along the way. Passenger Agents were denying direct tickets from India to Canada, and vice versa. So the law itself wasn’t, but there was a coincidence.
Not to say racists laws weren’t coming in literal terms. My own people, the Magyars and other (Austro)Hungarians were denied over World War politics. 1967 formally banned the Chinese based immigrants.
It was not smart, even people who don’t like that law and protocol set have to, they have nothing else to go on. They had to know what they were in for, and had many diplomatic offices to go to before shipping out. Passenger Agents, ticket sellers, they knew.
The NDP leader is oddly enough now is a Gunga Din, since they claim to be representing the labor movements that made that and similar laws happen. Between them and Filmorites, there was not much flexibility. Perhaps Bernier’s populism is trying to nab that.
Now when it truly goes down to it, it is not the non-existent independent Canada at fault and needing to apologize even for the 1908 law changes. It’s the English on both ends of the trip.
Want an apology, go to Windsor. Trudeau’s is an empty one.
Now it’s not that I wouldn’t rule out a country, but it would be based on Maoism and a Social Credit law that I’d bar an entire country from having immigrants come in. No loyalty to Maoism thanks. Those are the only ones allowed to leave the country. I don’t like anchor baby bullshit, but I wouldn’t care if the one trying it is English, Irish, Magyar, Arabian or South Asian.
We really should learn from 1908, not make empty apologies. You can’t just stop one kind of people from coming in, it has to be merited and people who come should go to a diplomatic office first.
